Program Description

Students will travel to northeast Thailand for a multidisciplinary experience that will expose them to another culture and provide a strong intercultural and international dimension to their learning experience at NWACC. Students will learn to interact and work with people from another culture. This multidisciplinary course has a service learning component designed to accommodate students pursuing a wide variety of courses of study. Prior to departure students will study Thai culture and geography and learn a bit of Thai language through a distance learning course. In summer we will travel to Bangkok to visit important cultural sites before traveling to the main site for the project – the Sakaerat Environmental Research Station (SERS). At SERS students will learn about tropical forest ecology, sustainability and conservation through guided tours and classroom lectures. We will also take excursions from SERS to see important cultural sites in northeast Thailand and interact with students at a nearby university ‐ Suranaree University of Technology. Students will also participate in service learning/outreach projects. Depending on their areas of interest, students will be "plugged in" to various projects at SERS and the surrounding area. Students will register for GLST 2003.
